i have just started a new 20 gal tank ,started reading alot after i orderd my Serrasalmus Rhombeus i just got him today in and i had the tank set up for 5 days befor but i did not cycle anything i tested the water befor it had a high ph which i lowerd with a 7 ph balance but there was a .25 ppm of ammoinia and 0 nitrate and 0 nitrite. I have had a feeder gold fish and the 4 inch peranha in the tank the ammoinia has gone up another .25 and it has only been like 7 hours.
what should i do i dont want him to die
but the tank was not cycled and the ammoina is going to keep rising should i go buy sothing to controll it plz help my Serrasalmus Rhombeus was expensive

i am using a under gravel filter with a over powerd air pump for a 60 gallon tank

her is a pic of my set up and my fish that has been hiding behind a plant since i have gotten home

It was a bad move to order a fish without knowing what it needed. The cost shouldn't be an issue, but I understand loosing an expensive fish vs. an inexpensive one. You will need to start doing DAILY water changes untill your cycle has completed. read the sticky labled cycling. In the mean time, start saving a bunch af cash for the MUCH larger tank this fish is going to need VERY soon.

I think that he will need a bigger tank. A website I was on said that they could get up to a foot long.

You really shouldn't feed feeder goldfish, they have no nutritional value and can carry disease.

Pirhanas like to be in schools, which might be why he hides.

You need to read the sticky on cycling.

Do huge water changes daily.

You shuld research a fish before you buy it.

argh, sumthin fishy beat me to it.

i did some reaserch i know he grows very slow 1 to 2 inches a year and this species of perhana will eat their buddies unless hey have 40 gallons each.
i will start doing water changes should i also use somthing that detoxifies the ammoina

i read alot about the fish i just didnt find anything about cycleing until it was to late. ya i read that gold fish are jsut fatty so i bought 1 gold fish to feed and 10 minnoes

to add on to what they said. I would also quit adding anything to alter the ph. It was explained to me that by adding the chemicals to move your ph up and down...that it never really remains constant. Your fish should adjust to your ph and a stable ph is MUCH better for the fish than a ph that constantly bounces up and down. IMO the less chemicals you add to your tank..the better. The only ones ever added to my tanks was some stress coat (I do not even have to mess with dechlor because of well water) and salt once to treat ich.

You have a long road ahead of you to try to keep this fish alive thru the cycle. Think daily and sometimes twice daily or even more water changes. PLEASE do not add any more fish to your tank. Even after it's cycled that ONE fish would pretty much stress the bio load of your tank.
Good luck to you and your fish.

the water that comes out of my tap is city water should i add my stress coat to it befor putting it in the tank and what % of water should i change out daily.

basterds at fish stores dont tell you **** they just want o sell you **** didnt say a word about cyclying befor i buy some fish.

You need to dechlorinate it, I'm not sure about stress coat.
I'd say 50% daily.

Sadly, this is true in many cases, which is why its good to join a forum like this.
