help with cycling tank

As another noob who just started with this I did much worse than you. Bought tank and immediately dropped 20 fish in.
Thankfully I started actually reading when the first one died. I returned all but a couple to the store so hopefully they made it. I have found I really like this hobby and just bought a 55 gal and am determined to do it right this time. I've bought my filter but that's about it so far since I dont want any more little fishy souls on my concience. Not even putting gravel in until I research which I think is best.
This board is awesome btw and the people here seem to be a great deal of help.
