my tank has been cycling for 2 weeks with fish, i know thats terrible but im new and i didnt know any better. The readings I got tonight were ammonia 0
Nitrite is at .5 and nitrates at 5. I have been doing pwc every day and the nitrite wont seem to go below .5. :help:

You just have to wait, and keep up the pwc. Most tanks aren't cycled in two weeks.

I feel so bad that I cycled with my corys I have been told that they dont do good with bad water levels. I have all 3 of mine named and I feel bad for them, cause they are so cute.

I have been doing 25% except for today i did 40% because the nitrites were 1.0 and i got worried for the fish. One already has popeye he is eating still and swimming around. Im so worried for these fish.

What are the nitrites on your tap water?

Keep testing for both Ammonia and NirtItes and keep them both Under 0.25 and you'll do fine ;)

During a cycle, the water will dictate Water Changes (WC). Don't worry your cycle will not be adversely affected by doing them. And yes, your tap may have nitrItes in it, so testing that will be helpful.

What size tank and tankmates? And welcome to AC ;)

My tank is 10 gallons and I have a snail and 3 corys. I tested my tap for nitrites and it was negative. This mornings readings before water change Nitrite 1.0 ammonia 0 nitrate 5. After water change nitrite .5 ammonia 0 nitrate 5. I hope im doing this right i change out 26% in the am and 25% in the pm is that ok? or should i do 50% all at once? Th reason im afraid to do it all at once is that i dont want to have to turn the filter off the water level would get too low to do it all at once. And thanks for the welcome i deeply appreciate all the help.

Hi blueeyes,

I would turn the filter off. Don't worry about it, the water changes don't take that long in a ten gallon tank!
It took our ten gallon almost a week of 50 to 60% water changes every day for the nitrite to stay at .25 and finally dropping to 0. It is nerve wrecking: you do a water change at the level is .25. But then in the evening it is again .5 or 1. I actually did two water changes a day for about three days as I was worried about our fish as well.
But all survived, it took the tank 4 weeks to cycle... with a bit more than a week of high nitrites (the amonia got down to zero very quickly, but the darn nitrite...).
Good luck!

L.
