help with filter/surface disturbance please

What can I do to tone down the surface disturbance from my Penguin 170 filter? It is really causing alot of bubbles and a big crash on the surface of my tank. I have raised the water level as far as I can and it helps some, but there is still quiet a bit of surface disturbance, and tons of bubbles in my tank from it. Is there anything else I could do?

use some form of wire if you are using an external pump to squeeze the air tube.

1. Put a foam sleeve on the intake tube. I’ve never done this but I’ve seen it posted by OrionGirl, see this thread http://64.191.28.50/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8800&highlight=sponge+intake it was the first I could find quickly with her info

2. I’ve read where somebody put one of those clear plastic soap dishes (buy new!) with the suction cups right under the output of the filter to diffuse the flow.

3. Attach a foam piece or something to the output, to extend the flow so it doesn’t drop in so abruptly. I bought little plastic clamps and attached a plastic piece to the output of my filter. Mine is an AquaClear, I don’t know if something similar can be put on a Penguin. (see pic of my extension)

You could epoxy a piece of plexiglass to the spillway out of the filter, too.

Some noise from an HOB filter is unavoidable. It's why some folks won't use them. If you want true silence, canister filters are the way to go.
