I'm afraid I'm stumped on this and I was wondering if anyone could help me with my favorite fish.

I have a male/female pair of German Blue Rams. The female is as bright as ever and is gorgeous to look at, but the male unfortunately looks as though he is losing color. When I first got him he was the brightest looking fish in the store, but now he rarely shows his colors. Most of the time his black spots are barely visible and he keeps his dorsal and anal fins up tight against him, although I can still see his gorgeous blue scales when he turns the right way in the light. He has the same appetite he has always had and eats like a pig. He isnt spending anymore time hiding than he had before. In fact, he seems to follow the female around a lot. He just plain doesnt look happy. Every once in a while he flairs up and his fins go straight and I can see all of his colors just as they were before, but that usually only lasts 30 seconds or so. I introduced the female about a week ago, and his dullness only began about 3 days ago.

Here are my tank stats so far:
12 gallon Aquapod nano
Hardness 2
PH 7.2
no ammonia
no nitirites
10ppm nitrates
79-85 degrees F

Stock:
1 male blue ram
1 female blue ram
4 white cloud minnows
3 otto cats
1 ghost shrimp
6 amano shrimp
Various plants and a bog log

I am currently using Black Water Expert, and adding iron, carbon, and trace elements for my plants. Ive been making water changes with mostly distilled water.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on with my male ram? Has anybody had similar experiences?

This is happening with my german blue male too! I actually came here looking for help because I'm worried about him. The female (whom he's already spawned babies with) is doing really well and looks awesome, but he is fading away.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks.

try upping the feeding just a bit, or if you've got another tank switch it, if that doesn't work try some stress coat?

How big is the female compared to the male?

Im thinking that the female might be the more dominant fish, and thats why her colros are so great and your males are not.

And maybe try keeping the temp more stable. GBRs love it at atLEAST 82F.

try to keep the temp stable.

adding blackwater extract could also pose a problem for it tries to soften the water while the buffers in the water drive the hardness back up. you should only need to add water conditioner (and the trace elements back after the RO)

This exact thing is happening in my tank too! Male looks sad, female is fine. But my temp is around 79-80 whereas I had it at 84 a few weeks back when they spawned. Maybe I should raise the temp. Water params are fine...I have a kinda high ph but it didn't seem to bother him before, and I'm working on getting it lowered.

Male died last night. :-( I'm very sad because he was soooo cool, my favorite fish. I don't get it. Water is 0-0-10, no ammonia.

They do like the temp 80 +

any marks on him? And did he kind of swirl around the tank like a drunk?

That's what happened with my last pair.

Also, what ever happened with the spawning? Any fry?

The eggs got eaten, I was going to remove the eggs next time....now there will be no next time *uncontrollable sobbing*.

He turned a dark color and lost his prettiness, and spent the last two days "hiding" in the plants and around the bottom.

I'm so sad.
