I have had my 120 gallon running for a month now.

added a sump with in sump skimmer a couple days ago and now we notice a fairly strong odor from the water in the room!!

Is this due to aeration of the water? will it go away after awhile?

Your tank is new and needs to go through its entire cycle process. It is definitely possible to have a stronger smell coming from the water. My guess is if you test the water you will still find your parameters out of whack. Give it more time and continue to monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. You need to finish your cycle process. Keep the lights off, don't add fish, and wait.
