I'm freaking out! :22_yikes: My son notice tiny white specs crawling on his furniture right around the front of the hermit crab tank. They are so tiny that we only noticed them because they were moving. I can't tell the shape of them so I'm not sure if they are food mites or book lice but they are freaking me out. They came from the inside of the cage because they were also all over the inside of the cage. I googled it and this is what I've done so far:
-Removed the crab, turned him upside down (I noticed they were crawling on the inside of his shell), rinsed the inside of his shell with salt water glub
-placed him in a separate container, open shell facing up, filled with non-chlorinated water, and let him sit there for 10 mins (he actually righted himself a couple of times and I flipped him back over again to make sure all the air bubbles were out.)
-placed him in a cardboard box
-completely cleaned out the tank, sprayed it first with mite spray, threw out everything with the exception of the extra shells and food dishes which I cleaned in hot soapy water and then microwaved for 1 minute, sprayed the tank again, cleaned it out with hot soapy water.
-bought new substrate dirt, microwaved it for 1 minute then placed it back in the newly cleaned tank.
-I placed the cleaned water dishes in his cardboard box with newly purchased food.
-I completely cleaned the top, sides and back of his furniture with Clorox wipes.
So... I checked the inside of his furniture cabinet (not the drawers) and noticed 1 mite crawling around in there so I squashed it. I don't notice anything else crawling around but here's my thing. I'm worried that these things are all over his room? They are white tiny specs... are they food mites or book lice? Something else? Should I wash everything in his drawers? I washed everything that was in his cabinet but not the drawers... Will these things crawl onto us? If they ended up on the outside of the crab tank could my house be infested now? Sorry for so many questions but I'm freaking out!!
