Hey all! Filter Media Q

Hey guys,
I have a wet/dry w/ skimmer and UV on my reef tank and am wondering what sort of filter media I should use in the wet/dry, the water in the tank is crystal clear but in the filter it is murky. It also has a bit of a smell to it, can I use carbon somehow to remedy that?

Most advice I've heard is for reef tanks is to not run a UV system but go with activated carbon full time or when needed for water clarity.
