and i thought id tell you what i have,as of yet i dont have any problems, my tank is a 28-30 gallon tank which is set at 78-80*, its been set up for a few months now after cycling it for nearly 8 weeks, in it i have 20 neon tetras, 7 male fancy guppies (one of which is a dragon guppy and is beautiful) 2 corys catfishes, and 1 male neon blue dwarf gourami. my water tests come out as 7.5 ph, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 20-30 nitrates, i change 80% water once a week, and add tap water dechlorinator, and filter boost stuff that says it helps keep nitrates down or something, its a water conditioner. i have 1 live plant in there but i dont know what it is, the rest of my plants are fake, but i like it. i run a filter which is supposed to be rated for tanks 4 feet plus, i think its called a fluval 4. it s a great looking bright active tank, oh and it has sand on the bottom so the catfishes whiskers wont be harmed :)

Welcome to AC! Good to hear your tank is running great. From what Ive read in your post..I see you are using a nitrate reducer. This stuff is basically just throwing your money away. The water changes you are doing is reducing your nitrates and is sufficient enough not to warrant the use of this product, besides this.. nothing can replace water changes for nitrates. I personally would discontinue using it, just remember to continue to use water conditioner for removal of chlorines and chloramines..

Hello, :welcome: to AC.

I agree with blueiz about the nitrate reducer, all you should need to add to your water is a water conditioner to remove chlorines and chloramines.

Welcome to AC! Your tank sounds good, but like everyone said, your water changes will keep the Nitrates from building up, so you don't need a Nitrate reducer. Also, you have 2 cory catfish, but they like being in groups of 5 or more.

i know they like to be in bigger groups, but when i first got them 4 of them died with fin rot and i never did buy anymore as all the ones at my lfs had the same tatty fins etc and i didnt want to risk it. i will look into buying a few more if they will fit in with all the other tankmates, i just dont want to over crowd the tank and it already looks very full!

Welcome to AC. Your setup sounds nice but I am surprised the nitrates are as high as they are given those 80 percent water changes. Have you tested your tap water for ammonia and nitrate? At any rate the levels aren't too bad. What is the brand of water conditioner you are using?
How about a pic of the tank?
