Does anyone have any tips on how to make my jewels a little more out going?

I mean they come out to eat..usually..but apart from that they just hide

They have lots of hiding places..maybe the tank is a bit to bright for them? has anyone known this to be a problem?

They had fry recently which I removed a few days ago. THey were a little more outgoing when the fry were around.

anyone have any ideas?

The brightness of the tank seems to be the most logical source of mental anguish for them, especially if they have all the hiding places that you say that they do. (I believe you.:D)

The other question is their location...if they are in a high-traffic area, you can expect them to make themselves scarcer than if they were in their own room, off the beaten path.

Oh, I mean high-traffic, like people walk through all the time. The vibrations from footsteps can really make fish into 'fraidy cats.

oh nah its not like a crowded hall, but they are in the main room of the house which generally has a bit more traffic than the other rooms. not quite what you are hinting at though i think.

They are ambush predators and hide until they see prey and whack it . Then they go back to hiding until the next target swimms by. It's in there nature that's just what they do. If never seen my Jewel swimm around in the open for more then 30 seconds.

yes good point REINER they are ambush predators, much like salvinis. they normaly hide in the shadows untill they see something they like, maybe you should put some giant danios in there or sum sort of dither fish. maybe they would come out more then. IMO
