So my understanding of lighting for plants is that they grow best under higher kelvin ranges, I think 5000-1000 was the range I read.

I can only seem to find CFLs that are 2700K, where the heck do you all get higher Kelvin CFLs?

Ive been to Ace, Kmart, Longs, another Ace, and I cant find any that are high range... I dont have a lowes or home depot near me unfortunately so those are out. Anyone got any ideas?

The higher color spectra will have names like daylight. When you look closely at the label it will give the color temperature somewhere on it. Even a cool white runs higher than 2700K. I saw some cool white last week marked as 4100K.

yeah, the only bulbs up here that have the "Daylight" on them are Sylvannia, and for some reason they dont comply with the standards so their Daylight is actually only 3500K

Everything else I have seen here is "Soft White" and none of them are higher than 2700K

Looks like I will be ordering online :(

The highest K rating I have found at hardware and home improvement stores is 5000. Mgamer recommended to me the 6500 daylights. I finally found the at Walmart. The K rating is clearly labeled on the front of the package. I bought both the 48" T8's and a few CFL's for my 2.5g. They are color coded. (at walmart anyway) Look for the baby blue or sky blue packaging for the 6500k.

Have you tried looking at the part of the bulb that houses the ballast? Sometimes the kelvin rating is printed on it, among other things.

Philips "daylight" CFL's, sold at Home Depot(at least in canada), are 6500k and are sold in(as I've seen) up to 42w.

Unfortunately the nearest Walmart is a hundred miles away...Looks like I am going to have to buy online. Its a little scary though considering how fragile bulbs are...hope the shipping box says "Fragile" in really big font...

Here, maybe this will help.

100 miles? Wow. I have 8 within 35 miles of me. Just call around. Surely someone in you area would carry GE bulbs. Kmart, Target, Ace and countless others.

I wouldn't think that a cfl bulb would be that fragile to ship. I have dropped them before and not broke them. As long as the box doesn't get crushed into something resembling a pizza box it should be ok.

And IME boxes marked "Fragile" are more likely to get busted. I think maybe some people in the parcel industry translate that word into something that means "I'll bet you can't break it."
