I have a Freshwater Master Test kit for my 55 gallon tank. I tested everything this morning. Everything but my high range ph is right on. My high range is off the chart. Dark, dark purple. I do a 25% water change and vacuum the gravel once a week and just did that yesterday. Can anyone tell me why the high range ph could be so high? Would you recommend proper ph7.5 or ph down?

Thanks!

I should add that I do have some proper ph 7.0 but am not sure if I should use it or not. This is a community tank...

If your pH jumped, perhaps take a reading of the Tap Water and see what it reads out of the fawcett. your local water may have a problem and if the reading is off the charts then there's somethng to be concerned about.

Another possibility is that the pH High solution is bad or there's a mis-calculation in the number of drops used.

re-verify what the tank pH is, then test water right out of the tap, then set some tap water aside for about 24 hours to gas off and test tap water pH again. This will give you some good indications on what may be going on.

Also...how old is the test kit you're using as they do expire...

Ok now this is wierd. I just tested both tap and tank and they are both testing at 7.4. When I tested the tank the first time, the test immediately turned dark purple right after the first drop???? Anyway, must have been a fluke or something. The test kit I bought about 2 months ago from Als online.

is it possible that the test tube may have been contaminated with something else? ie did you wash/rinse it off really good before the bad test? perhaps one of the other regents was still in the tube in some form.

inded if you put your fingers in the glass at the top opening it can also throw things way off make sure to wipe it with a paper towel before testing also rinse it well and wipe it before testing a couple of drops of tap water wont hurt if it is still in the tube but a small finger print can throw things off.
