Just got back from the lfs and along with more guppies and they called them broad melon swords. I've already found about 4 snails no clue what kind, and also have 4 guppy fry. Should I be careful about the snails? Never had fry before what would I need for the guppy fry? Also how can I help keep the fry alive?

The snails could be a problem. If you have more than one, you will soon have many. I would also check the plants for eggs. They will look like little blobs of jelly. Just scrape them off with your finger nails. As for the guppy fry, they are fairly easy to raise, just make sure you crush some food small enough for them to eat, and provide them with plenty of hiding places so they don't get eaten by the adults.

I'm OK with the idea of having snails but I don't want them to take over or kill off the plants I have or get. I would like something for natural algae control. What are your ideas on that?

they are probably, one of three snails...ramshorns, bladder snails, or MTS snails...none of them are bad for your tank and none will eat your plants.

they all can aid you in your tank...just don't over feed your tank.

all of the hitchhiker snails only need one snail to breed and make more...but little to no food for the snails = no breeding out of control!

so don't over feed and you will have a few nice lovely little snails cursing around your tank picking up leftovers here and there.

^ fa sho. they could also be pond snails, my least favorite of the "Surprise! I moved in!" type snails. my favorite are the malaysian trumpet snails. they mostly hide during the day and come out at night. bladder snails are neat to look at up close, and ramshorns are kinda neat. pond snails are just kinda backyard boring tho.
