In a couple of months I am thinking of getting rid of my Convicts and getting some Discus.... All I really want to know is how many I could fit into a 30 gallon... and some things I should know before I get some...Thanks!

not many. when they are small you can keep them in a 30 for a awhile, but as they get mature, you will have problems with the "pecking order" in a tank that size.

its not much room for the weaker fish to get away from the dominant ones.

a 55 is sort of the minium size for a decent discus tank for adults. you could keep 4 in a 55.

but a 30 is too small.

back in the day, I tried just two in a 30 and they were fine until they got about 4-5 inches. Then they started to fight..

I would reconsider getting discus until you get a larger tank.

I was thinking two for a little while...how fast do they grow?

If fed well, and a proper environment, about an inch per month.

Ok... Anything else I should know?

I have 4 in a 55g that will be changing over to a 125g this weekend...I am only going to be putting 2 more discus in the 125g once it gets set up and settled in. When I introduced 4 juvs. in the 55, they beat the heck out of each other kiling one which was later replaced. I know they will have a pecking order especially if they are juvs. so I would have reservations about putting discus in a 30g. Not to mention they will probably outgrow it.

I personally would not recommend any Discus in a 30, unless, you plan on upgrading to a larger tank.
55 is the minimum with a 75 or 90 a better bet.
then the 30 could be used as a grow out and later a qt.
at issue is the recommended minimum number to keep is 4. they are a schooling fish so they should actually be kept in a group of 5-6. yes I have it from a reliable source you can keep 6 in a 55.(larger tanks are encouraged)

A 30g is too small for them. 55g minimum, as everyone has said. You could keep maybe 4 tiny ones in a 30g for a very short amount of time, but there would be risks. Best bet is to start big.

I have kept a pair of adult discus in a 25 gal for a long time. The 25 is 4 inches deeper than a 30. Discus need height. The key is they are one male and one female who get along. It might be possible to keep two females but I would not try this wth two males.

It is virtually impossible to sex smaller discus so a 30 is not a great tank for them since smaller discus should be kept in groups.

Temps for discus: 82+
Softer water is preferred.
Flow should not be very strong.
Minmum of two wc a week up to 50% each.
Bare bottom makes cleaning easier.
They tend to prefer lower light levels.
They tend to be grazers so several small feedings a day rather than a single bigger one.
