HOB Filter maint. question.

Just curious how often most people actualy break down their hob filters and clean them.. i mean the filter not change media. I just cleaned my crap one out and wow found out why it was crap... now the whisper.. whispers... again.. or something to that effect.. anyways yeah the motor assy was full of ... crud.. eew..
 
Once a month or so, I'll pull the filters off and degunk them.

Normally do it when I'm doing a PWC as the filters are shut down anyway...
 
usually when i do my weekly PWC's, i close my Penguin's midintake strainer so my HOB doesn't stop filtering and the biowheel remains wet. so i probably service it twice a year, or when the impeller gets gunky. other than that, monthly cleaning of the filter pads and back to work.

yeah, if i had the extension, i would, but mostly its every time i see excessive build up..

Emp 400 2x/year
AquaClears: When they fail to restart if power turned off and on.
Eheims: every 4-5 months.

Media and/or prefilter rinsings done weekly.
 
I break down my Whisper whenever it fails to restart. I usually break down my EMP whenever I break down the Whisper just because I already have everything out; however, I can usually go 6-12 months between tearing the EMP appart if I get lazy. The Whisper needs a good cleaning every 3-4 months otherwise she won't start up again.

:cool: Not real familiar with the Whisper HOB but w/ my A/C110 - regular maint. every 2 wks. Complete breakdown every 4 mo. It's usually pretty crudy inside by then. It probably could go longer but I figure it's less strain on the motor if I do it at 4 mo. rather than 6 mo. Good luck,"T"
 
i clean the motor thinger in my aqua clear mini on my 15g when it stops working lol ........ sometimes i turn off my power bar and then the motor does not start again thats when i clean it out and give the motor a kick start (just had to do that today!)
