HOB intake suggestions...

that's awesome!!! I really like the idea of using a filter to do the suction instead of power heads (or airstones, which are much less powerful). Again, ingenious. The inventiveness of aquarists never ceases to amaze me :) It seems our aquatic wards are the mother of invention...

is that how they're making UGF plates now? When I used them back in the early 90's, it was more like a grid.

Thanks for the compliments. Ma'am, I do believe this corrugated look is just another way of making them these days (Lee or Penn Plax call them a "Premium" UGF). The good old grid is still out there, soldiering on. Really, I don't know what makes it more "premium" than a grid type, other than it is tough as nails and has resisted breakage due to me accidentally dropping it while I was working on it.

Hi there! We have an HOB in a lightly/moderately planted 40 gallon half-hex. Great tank, lovely fishies, water param's are stable. The problem is that the intake is constantly clogged with plant gunk. Any suggestions out there on how to help with this? I will happily keep up the current regime if I have to, but it seems like I am missing something obvious. I am curious about the idea of a sponge intake, would that help? And how do I go about modifying my current intake? THANK YOU!
i use filter floss on all my intakes. just wrap a thin layer around it and clean or change weekly .helps keep your bio media clean as well.and yes lower intake the better.moves water from the bottom to the top.

NA- Very Cool! I don't think I have the skill to do that with this tank, and I have no desire to do a gravel change/disturbance, but when I redo my tank over X-mas break (I'm a teacher and time is quickly becoming a valuable commodity) I will definitely give it consideration.

I think I will try the sleeve filter over the pantyhose.

THANKS ALL!
