i decided on a HOB because i dont have room for overflows, sumps, refugs. i have been told to go octopus brand. it narrowed it down for me but there is still many to choose from. does anyone recommend one for me for a 55g? i know everyone says buy the best one you can afford so thats what i want to do. i have about $300 budget for one but can go a little higher.

thanks for the help!

CPR Backpaks are ok
Aqua C remoras are good...some suggest adding a better magdrive.
Ams Octopus ..nothing but good reviews and comments ive come across.
Euro Reef
ETSS brand.

Coralife there are mixed reviews ..the smaller ones are ok... the largest one 220g rated I think is the better of them all in design of the main body where the contact time is.

Yes ...craiglist or try online sales for local area... find the biggest you can get.

Reason being is the purpose of your skimmer is to rid your water of Dissolved Organic Compounds before they go through and convert in your system. Lightens the bio load on the biological filters you have.

SO yes... buy the biggest you can get your hands on of these brands.

maybe i was unclear. i decided on the brand name octopus for a HOB protein skimmer. now what i want to know is which model i should go with in the price range of $300

Well buy the biggest one you can silly =). I cant say which one to specifically buy. I think if you understand the mechanics behind Skimmers you may be able to make a better choice once you do.

I read this before I got into buying a skimmer...it was very insightful.

where theres a lot to choose from. they have versions that say surface skimmer, filter, then theres the dual ones and all other kinds. i just want to be 100% sure on my purchase. i want to get rid of this crappy whisper filter, i think its leaking nitrates into my tank even though i change it once every 2 weeks.
