Flowers--Moss roses, snap dragons, and columbine are my favorites plants--hardy, tolerant of sun and shade, and don't need to be watered constantly--plus they keep coming back from seed, year after year, in a riot of colors. I like many others, but most of them are babies that require constant attention to thrive out here, while these three seem to do well no matter what.
Shrubs--currents and dwarf lilacs.
I'm currently re-doing the landscaping (such as it was) in the front and back yards of my house. I'll be tearing out all of the various grasses in the front, putting down rock and yucca, along with whiskey barrels for annual flowers. In the backyard, it's mostly weeds, and I'm putting in 3 small beds, one for irises and gladiolas, another for lillies, and a third with peonies and roses. Then, a bed that is along the base of the deck with thyme, moss roses, and areas for annuals. The open areas are going to be planted with gramma grass--a native grass that stays short and is very hardy/drought tolerant. Some currents and lilacs are going in around the edges to cover the dog run fencing and disguise a serious slope on one end.
