I went over to check on the 55 that I am guiding the care of... the people are gone for the hollidays... well any way the heater was unplugged and in the unheated apartment it was down to 57 in the tank

current occupants are RTB shark, Yoyo loach and four dyed tetras are still kicking

only the black molly that I was wondering how much longer it was going to live has died so far... I plugged the heater back in and the temperature is on its way back up

Now you have to hope it doesn't heat up too quickly or they get another temperature shock. Unplugging the heater was not cool on their part....well, actually it was..... I hate it when things like that happen because then most people want to blame whoever was "left in charge". Hopefully you saved their tank though. :D

not that I wish that on any fish but at least we havn't gotten any fish in the tank that we got cause we wanted them.... so glad the promise to be ordered angels are not in the mix.

so do you think I should go over there again and unplug the heater for a bit to make the temp rise more gradual?

Well maybe you could set the heater to different temperatures? Try changing it to 65F and then once it gets there, wait a couple of hours, then bring it up to low 70s. If you do it slow enough it'll be fine, just think- in the wild the sun heats up the water during the day and at night it cools down. Good luck

ok I will turn the heater down as far as I can but it is a submersible with a narrow presette range to select from so it only goes down to like 68 or so

or I could take one of my small tank heaters over there and that would heat the water slower cause the wattage is lower

Boy that stinks. I bet you didnt' need that added stress.

I know how you're feeling though. Two weeks ago my heater apparently got stuck in the 'on' position. The tank was at 95/96 when I got home. Not cool! Literally.

Though...ahem...your problem would have been avoided had the plug been left in...ahem .
