Has anyone used the plexi glass home depot sells to acutally build a fish tank? I have a few sheets left over from a project I did and would be interested in making a tank for my room.

Thanks!

Mike

Plexi glass is not good enough unless used as liner. Should use Acrylic if want to construct DIY tank.

plexi is too soft to hold much weight. its also probably not thick enough. your best bet with plexi is to make a divider or the divisions for a sump. you can also make a nice protective layer for a light fixture to keep water away from the fixture

Plexiglas is just one of several forms/brands of acrylic glass. The stuff they sell at Home Depot is extruded acrylic sheet, which is one of the cheapest (and lowest quality) types there is. It bonds fine with the Weld-On line of bonding agents. Aquariums are generally make with cell-cast acrylic sheet. The extruded stuff is inferior in both clarity and strength.

Perhaps you could build a wet/dry from it. Just don't make the water level more that a 12 inches high (max) and the baffles will help brace it. I have seen sumps made from 1/8" cell-cast before.
