Hood Design Question

I have my hood built almost and am starting to thin of where to place air ventilation? The Back or the top? Light will spill out more from the back do to being under the light source but I am not sure how light coming out the tip will look either.

I have a 48" odessea halide unit. Above the light will be bout 1" so I could put air holes above it where light will not be under direct light because it will be over the top of the light source....

Is it confusing or did I explain the situation well?

If the unit has a reflector, most of the light will be aimed toward the tank. I have the back and top of my canopy open, and there isn't a whole lot of light that escapes. The more ventilation you have, the longer the lamps will last and the less heat will go into the tak, so I would do both if you can.

Mine were setup on either side of the canope. . . . but, the back would hide them better...


As long as you get some air circulatig inside, you should be fine.

I fabricated my own top with tanksters help. The fan is in the back center and I have 8 inche slits (a total of 8 to allow the heat to escape) and all is well. The light reflects off the water and with the timers on them, all is well for a nice light during the evening (kinda like the glow from a p/u cargo light).
