First off hi all i,m danny been a long marine reading book fan ((basically reading books and wishing i had the nerves to get one ))

so first things first i thought it would be a bit of a better way to start of easy with a tropical fish tank ((big mistake )) turns out they are just as much to do then there is marine :eek3: but god i wish i had got one sooner then are unreal to watch :perv:

now the hope i'm on about is the hope that some of u coudl shed soem light into whats wrong with my betta ((if this is the wrong place for this i'm sooo sorry but in kinda a worryed time my ill betta and this is the place that seemed ok for it ))

now for that last few days he's been fine he's in a 10gallon tank i have got a master test kit and all is well on the test front but i woke up today to find him lieing there on the tank floor with big black spots with white around them. He will swim but he ain't his nomal self i have got some metafix but after reading about it i ain't happy to use it so i started putting the aqua salt in with the water change as this is ment to help him

from what i have read its a fungus more the ICK ((think thats how its spelt ))
now money ain,t a problem i have bought every bloody food they have only to find out he like hand feed blood worm lol

the main thign is just to cure him and make sure his health comes first and since the pet shop is a bit dipsey i thought to ask the people who know from experience

please could any help or at least shed some light

all the best and hi again danny:)

Well, just for starters, could you post the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings? I know you mention they are fine but just so everyone knows what you have.

Liquid test kit? Those same readings on your tap water?

Are you using a good dechlorinator?

If nothing else in the meantime...daily water changes of 50% can not hurt, vac'ing out any uneaten food and wastes.

sure sorry for not putting them on in the first place

from my tap water

chlorine 0.8mg/L

i use API proper PH 7.0 on any water that will be going into my tank at
25'c

i use a liquid kit ( mini master nutrafin test kit) i do have the tetra test strips but i read the liquid are better at accurate results

my tank readings are
chlorine 0mg/L

ammonia 0mg/L

nitrite 0.3mg/L

nitrate 5-10mg/l ((i think its more 5mg/l but me and my other half can't decide ))

i do a 20% water change every morning ((but will move it upto 50% if thats any chance of helpping the little guy)) i vac all food out and waste
and thx for the fast reply Rbishop it means a lot :)

I would ditch the proper PH7 a stable PH is much more important.
How long has the tank been running? A cycled tank should not have any trace of nitrites.

thx for the reply and i,m sorry to sound thick but will it say stable ph ?

i got the tank and fish from a friend who got sick of them after a few days ((more a friend of a friend )) and the thought of them in a corner or thrown out kinda got to me a bit so i have bought them off him now all i know is its a few days and i know that you should have them cycle for a few week but i know this has'nt happened here but i'm trying like crazy to undo what he's done

a update on the betta is the white has gone off him just leaving black marks or spots could these be burns from some nitrate spike or other spike ?

and is there anyway to help him or heal the poor fella

Possibly could be burns. Usually folks will do a fishless cycle with ammonia to develop the bacteria needed. In this case, you are fishy cycling. You could have nitrites in your tap. I would keep the water changes large and frequent untill you consistently get liquid readings of zero on ammonia and nitrites.

yeah i read up on the cycle on a few sites i think basicly he knew abotu this and couldn,t be bothered with the expense hence where i came in which is madding in a kinda way

anyway i have tested my tap water for the nirite and nirate the only one to have be there was nirate at 0.5 ((it was really really faint ))

i think the betta is not going to survive i', keepign an eye on him to make sure the others don,t touch him and hoping the rest will be fine the pet shop won,t take them no matter how much i offer so looks like i,m up all night again tryign to save them lol the stress

i have got them a air stone and really good air pump will this help ? i know there good but not sure if it will upset them more or what at this stange

also go the knife fish a hiding place so hopefully he will be more happy now and got shrimp food as i can,t see any algae so i don't understand how there alive after so many days with out being fed but at least there eatting anyway thx all for the help and fast replys

Ummm..what else is in that 10 gal tank with the betta..?

1) knife fish + 10 gallon aquarium is a recipe for disaster. you need a huge tank for knife fish. you say you like to read books on fish. well, there is plenty of info on the net about knife fish and their requirements

2) nitrATES are ok at the range you have. nitrITES are not. you need to get nitrITES to 0ppm. having any nitrITES means your tank is not fully cycled or your tank is overstocked (KNIFE FISH)

when you have a problem with your fish we need all the water parameters for your tank (ammonia, nitrITE, nitrATE, and temp are the big ones, general hardness if you have it). we also need to know about your setup; this is more than just tank size. what kind of filtration are you running? what are the bettas tankmates?

from what i have found out there is a knife fish he is about 3inch long now to my dread i have found out he can eat fish if he well fed so i,m tryign my best to make sure he is fed and has some where to hide

theres 3 small neon tetra i ain,t sure if there babys or some dwarf kinda they just look smaller then the ones i have seen in tanks

theres 2 shrimps but i can,t find out which ones or at least haven't found out so far there small about 2 inch and just seem to clean everything or at least look like it but the pet shop said i should try to make sure there is food for them untill the stuff they need grows

and from what i have found out there is a female guppie and male one with a big bright tale and the other is a kinda dull colour what type of guppie i ain,t sure just read up and looked at some pics so i,m 90% sure they are

as for that i haven't bought anything or added anything till i find out what i am doing or dealing with

there's no real plants just plastic

sorry for the chucks of info kinda all new to this and i am reading up now marine was my interest wheres as now i'm diving into tropical so i'm readin all i can and seeking advise

the filter is a tetra tec 300 and a tetra tec heater set to 25'c i can tell u more on that as i don,t have any instructions sorry but i bought to thermonitors and its staying at 25'c all the time so i think its ok

i bough a tetratec aps 50 air pump just becouse i read it really helps with no real plants

i want a bigger tank for them but thougth it might be better if i keep them in here rather then move then to another tank thats just been set up ((first port of call was the pet shop to get them out of the tank there in ))

and
General hardness is 0

and KH is 0-3 if that helps any

yet again sorry for the confusing posts
