The roots on my Hornwort got separated last night and I was wondering if it was going to die? If not, could I put some medium-size rocks on top of it to make it stand vertical?

I don't think you can kill it. It will just grow in 2 hunks now. And you can weigh it down if you wish. It doesn't root. I just leave some floating in the corners of my tank for cover and cut off hunks weekly and dispose of it so it won't take my tank over and block out the light to the planted plants.

Hortwort does not grow by the roots.

You can let if float and grow.

The roots are more 'anchors' than anything else.

I have a lot of trouble with my hornwort. any time it touches anything it looses its leaves! its so sensitive. I just let it float most of the time, but if I loop it through a cave (so it's not at the surface, and both sides stick out in open water) it looses all leaves touching the object. sometimes it gets itself in situations like that, and cleaning the mess it makes is awful.
does all hornwort do that? is it preventable?

I realy would like to ditch my hornwort. Its a real freaking mess if planted and gets tanged in my java moss and fern if left floating. I'd like a rooted plant that is cosmopolitan or asian that would fill the fast growing nitch that hornwort holds.

I've read up alittle on Hygrophillia Stricta and it seems to be a good choice. Althought it sounds like it will outgrow my tank. Would it be good in a 18" tall tank? Can you just prune off the taller shoots?
