So here's my question...I'm currently setting up my 80g to move most of my fish from my 20g over too and I was thinking that if I just leave the zebra danios and the plecos and maybe get a dwarf gourami I can use this tank as my hospital/QT tank for my 80. This tank is still in my living room so I want to keep some fish in it. Or is this a cruel thing to do, have a tank with fish in it that I add sick fish to and medicate? Is it OK to use it for a normal tank, QT tank AND a hospital tank too?? Or should I just buy a cheap 10g???

IMHO, using a 10 gallon is the best idea for hospital tanks. It is easier to use a 10 gallon since most medicines use the 10 as a basis for dosing. It becomes cheaper for the meds themselves since you aren't using as much either. Plus, 10 gallons are so cheap!!

If you were to use another tank of fish to use as a QT or Hospital tank, You are needlessly risking and medicating fish.

Just my thoughts.

That's what I wanted was people's thoughts!! Thanks!!
So since I've never had a hospital tank how do I go about getting it all set up? If I keep it under my sink, say, and need to set it up what do I do??
Just fill it with water from my 80g, dump a little gravel in too?? I would also maybe like to use a spong filter(it seems the simplest and cheapest), then I'd get air into the tank and a filter in one (that's how they work right, just hook them up to an airpump??) So how do I get the tank cycled?? Can I put the spong in my other tank for like a day, is that all it would take. Sorry to seem so stupid on this, I just don't know anything about this. What do people here do??

I use a small Whisper filter for my QT. I take the media for this (the bio-bag) and throw it in my Aqua Clear in my main tank. In this way, I always have a 'cycled' filter ready to go for the QT tank.

I don't bother with gravel for the tank either. It's only a temporary tank set up anyway. Just a couple of terra cotta pots and a fake plant are my decorations - just places to hide.

So basically you are on the right track, IMO!!

if you want to keep the tank set up, I'd go planted :thumbsup
