Can I take soap out of a tank, to make it safe for fish?

My brother bought my mother a used 90 gallon tank, but it was sitting in storage for a long time; so, it was very dirty. He didn't know that you can't use soap to clean a tank for fish. And I was wondering if any one knew how I can make it safe for my adult Oscar? Any info will help! Thanks!

Warm water lots of rinses.500% turnover of the tanks volume-rinse vol 5times. Carbon also helps so run the tank-after the rinsing for a few days with fresh carbon.

I'll add to what qtauaman said by saying, if you can, agitate the water as well. Using something like a "jet spray" nozzle on a hose would be very good, as that would use a ton of force as well as a large volume of water.

Thank you very much! I will try it and let you know how it works. I will post a new thread. THANKS AGAIN!

NEVER use soap, chemicals in soap inhibit bacterial growth thus a biofilter will not be able to be properly established, even after all the soap has been rinsed out.

I have been using Oxy-clean powder that you mix with water. You only need a little bit. Not a tankful. Just enough to cover the bottom 1/2 inch or so & clean away. Doesn't leave residue like soap. Never lost a fish by using it.

Agree with cdawson and Z Man -- never use soap, and try OxiClean (link provided in case you've never seen that madman selling it on late-night TV).

If you need to disinfect, a weak bleach solution will do the trick, but rinse extremely well.

It sounds like in your situation OxiClean will do the trick just fine.

The fellow knows not to use soap. His brother did the deed. Telling him soap is bad at this point is beating a dead horse. He simply wants to know how to get rid of it.
