How Can I Kepp My Pound Clear

Clear water doesn't always mean healthy water. A pond of green algae water may be very healthy in all other respects of ammonia, ph, nitrites and nitrates.

Clean looking clear water could have high ammonia and nitrites that are very harmful to the fish, but still look clean and clear! Good filtration is the first step to take towards that clear clean healthy water. Thadius has a good description of a simple effective filtration set up. There are other ways to do it also. LOTS of DIY information out there on the web.

DIY filtration is not hard and if care is taken will not cause disasters of draining the pond (don't ever put the pump on the bottom of the pond) Out of pond pump and filter set ups are the way to go if building a new pond.

I am assuming you saying this if the filter is an out of pond filter? Or are there other reasons not to put the pump in the pond. I was going to go with an in pond filter, so I see no reason the pump could not be in the pond.

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to size an in pond filter to the size of the pond? I do plan on making my filter and was thinking along the lines of a square or rectangle shaped plastic box with a lid that would snap on securely.

Reasons not to put pump in pond... electrical shorts if the pump were to ever decide to give out and in pond pumps from what I've seen seem at least to go out more frequently than an out of pond pump.

I would avoid an IN pond filter like the plague..it has to be cleaned sometime and I want my filters as easy to clean as possible or I know I won't do it as often as I should. I filter I have to drag out of the pond to clean to me is not an easily cleaned filter.

Well planned filtration can be DIY and done in such a way to safeguard the pond and most of all for the health of the fish. I don't try to "keep fish" I try to "keep the water". Keep the water and the fish will seldom have problems!

I will be making new pond(s) next spring for my wakins, shubunkins, bristol shubunkins and tamasabas. Any pond I build, no matter the size will have a bottom drain to some kind of settlement tank, even if only a 50 gallon drum and then to pump and to the rest of the filtration.
