Bio filtration is what you need. You can make your own in numerous different ways.

Very true but don't let it fool you. It is harder than it looks. I had my pond drained twice by mine cuz it sprang a leak :(. I ended up just buying one. Much easier.

Just depends on how handy you are or are not and how well you are able to adapt designs to your own setup. I've made all my filter setups and they work great with no problems. Its really not that tough. ;)

I have a 7'x13'x20" deep liner based pond. Planted well with Lillies, Anacharis, Hyacinths, Arrows and Iris's. I am by no means an expert, but here is what I do:

Skimmer with mesh pad installed into side of pond/liner with a Mag24 pump.
Pump piped Tetra UV2 and then to Biofalls that contains a circular mesh pad, mesh bag of lava rocks (around 5lbs), followed by a mesh bag with Barley straw. I replace Barley about every 4-6 weeks in season.

My water is and has been absolutely beautiful. Clear (tanins from barley tan it up somewhat, but clear) water to see all bottom activity. I am definately overstocked as my "raised from feeder goldfish" Comets have been breeding and living well over the past 6 years. I use no chemicals, nor do I do water changes. I add only if rain does not provide enough (use dechlorinator for tap water).

Hope that helps.

algea trouble

do you have your pond planted?

i have about a 700 gallon pond with 8 lilies and 12 other plants and have no major problem with keeping my water clear.

Also something to lok at it do you water runoff into your pond when it rains and this can cause a lot of cloudiness. I had that problem when i built my first pond.

Fishies like clean fresh water not just filtered water. Even filtering uses up compounds in the water that need replacing and fresh new water can do that.
