I was just reading the glo fish thread, and it made me wonder. How DO they get those artificial colors into "painted" tetras. Does it involve physically grabbing them and injecting them with a needle containing the flourescent compound, or is it somethign to do with the eggs or genes, or putting the chemical into the tank and letting it absorb??? I was never told exactly how this is done, and I was under the impression they were forcefully injected which is why I never bought them...even at age 7, when bright colored fish were my thing. But it doesnt seem practical to inject each fish individually, so I'll wait to hear the truth.

they use a syringe, sorta like a tatoo, another way they do it is they soak the fish in acid to get rid of there mucus coating then they dip them in dye. A new way is using lasers to color the scales and not the fish directly, its meant to be painless but i think there is some stress involved

Oh my God! That's horrible! I hope your kidding.

Aren't there enough naturally beautiful fish? Why is it necessary to screw around with mother nature, particularly in this way? I would NEVER support the people who do disfigure fish in this way or do genetic manipulation (aka glofish) by buying these fish.

nope not lying, had a bit of a talk with my lfs about dyed fish, they of course dont sell them but i asked them how did they do it. Told me all about it. Also found on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_fish

A good way to tell is if the fish has fancy letters or I *heart* you it was probably laser dyed, if there are different streaks of color around the body like with the glass tetras, they were probably dyed with a hypodermic syringe. If the whole fish is a different color then they were probably acid dipped dyed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH1RkGbziy8, that is probably a laser tattooed fish. Of course it is possible it was also a hypodermic syringe dye.

There is such thing as a food dye, these are more harmless and are more just used to bring out the natural color in the fish. I dont really like the idea of food dye but it doesnt seem that bad (i still dont use it, there normally found in food that say color enhancers like carotene.

im not a supporter of tattooed fish but i dont see much of a harm in glofish even though it is genetically manipulated. there are alot of animals out there that are altered too. i'll name a few of them. pets such as dogs and cats are altered through selective breeding. horses that are bred by champ horses. fish such as discus. eventually, even human beings will be genetically manipulated for health reasons. if they can detect that an unborn child will be born with a mutation and they have the ability to prevent it why not? if there is a good enough reason for doing something like that then id say go ahead.

and sorry if its off topic

I agree BrkD, but a LOT of people are deathly afraid of genetics and "bio-engineering". If they only knew how we got corn, flour and rice...

Anyways, I think the original issue was this "tatoo", or other direct methods of physically altering an indiviual fish whether it be dyes, needs, acids, or something else I don;t know.

I must ask though, does anyone use the coloring food? No I'm talking about colored flakes or color 'enhancing' food, but food that alteres the fishes color? Let me just say, NO I do not (nor will I)... But I do not know how these products work either???
