I am getting a package of 5 freshwater clams and snails from ebay and I would like to breed snails could I do that in a semi planted 5 gal aquairum? All input is thanked.
What type of snails? If they're apple snails, you need to make sure you've got both males and females (easy to tell if you look at their operculum, the piece of shell they use to close up, looks like a little trap door - females have a concave operculum, males' are convex). They'll also need some airspace above the water - they lay eggs outside the water. Check out www.applesnail.net for lots of information.
If they're Malayan Trumpet Snails, they're livebearers and they'll breed in the gravel with no assistance required.
If they're pond snails they'll lay packets of eggs (looks like jelly) and breed like crazy as long as there's plenty of food.
Depending on the type of plants, type of snail and how much you feed them, they may eat your plants.
