I know it is always best practice to use a quarantine tank. And I think it might be a good idea to set up a bare bottom 10 gallon as a small quarantine tank with a sponge filter.

But fish are not something you go and buy on a regular basis. So, what do you do to keep the biological filter alive in your quarantine tank? Do you stick the sponge filter in one of your other aquariums? Do you just use Prime daily?

Do people leave quarantine tanks up all the time, or so they put them up and tear them down as needed? If you do build as needed, can a small tank be safely stored in say, your garage, where, around here, temperatures can drop into the 20s. Is that idea bad for the silicone?

I usually leave the QT filters in other tanks. Then bring them over when needed.

I always had a HOB on my quarantine tank and kept extra media in my main tank that I could transfer into the QT when needed.

Andy, like said above, if you intend to keep a sponge filter for your QT, just keep a sponge filter going in one of your established, stable tanks. Fill your QT with new dechlorinated water and add that sponge filter when the QT is needed.

If I am going to use a quarantine tank, I'm most likely to use bio rings from an established canister filter (I have many around the house) and put them in a box filter with some gravel and fluff.

Will likely bleach the lot after using, and put it back into rotation.
