Hello everyone. I really need to know how to go about safely shipping fish to the united states. I am planning on shipping 4 young mono sebaes, ranging in size from 3 3/4 to 5 3/4 inches. What is involved that I need to know n order to make the trip as safe and stress free as possible?

I'd suggest having one fish of this size per each bag.

1/3 of a plastic bag is filled with water and inflated with oxygen (air will do too if you ship overnight or 2-day priority). The bag is tightly closed with a rubber band, and inserted (rubber band side, first) into another bag. The second bag is tightly closed too. This way you provide extra insurance and eliminate those tight corner spaces where fish can get stuck.

The bags are tightly packed into a styrofoam box (you may need to use styro peanuts, etc. for better packing), the box is taped and inserted into a regular shipping carton box.

If you wish, you can add a bit of AmmoLock or Amquel into each bag to help your fish cope with ammonia. Do not feed your fish for about 24-48 hours prior to shipping to minimize ammonia production.

If you don't want to bother, ask your LFS to pack everything for you. They should have everything but fish itself. :)

Goldfish, I live near Buffalo and Jim Robinson (Toronto) sent me some fish. He had to cross the border and send them via US Postal Service. I think you will have a problem getting them across any other way. I know it's about a 2 hour drive but you will save a lot of aggravation doing it that way.
