What is needed for a Quarantine Tank? Obviously making sure the water paramenters are right and the use of a heater are required. What about a filter? Is it really necessary if you change the water daily? How long should you keep new fish there? Thanks

a filter, a cycled filter, is necessary. you should set it up just like a regular tank, with no substrate, and a few hiding spots perhaps.. but that can change depending on the type of fish youre QTing.

You should QT a fish anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months, depending on tank temperature, medication regimen, and fish. it's a variable thing, really.

if you are medicating (if the fish gets a disease), then do daily water cahnges.

you can keep a small filter running on a display tank to keep it cycled, and then move it over to the QT tank when you need to.

a couple of fake plants and a small cave made from a broken terra cotta pot should suffice

I run sponges in all other tanks so I can establish one instantly, even if just a rubbermaid container. If for meds, and the meds can kill bacteria, I just do water changes.

Should I treat a QT tank with aquarium salt and/or any anti-bacterial meds such as melafix and pimafix when I buy new fish even if they show no signs of disease?

i wouldn't add anything to the water, other than obviously a decholorinator.
