How does it make sense to keep fish in a small tank or bowl while you wait for a large tank to cycle?
Don't you realize that the fish will be better off in a larger space, with more water to dilute their waste, and appropriate filtration/any filtration at all?
And also wouldn't it make sense that if you know you have to cycle the large tank, you *also* have to cycle the 5g one that the fish are currently living in? Just because it is temporary doesn't magically make it okay for the fish. Either do water changes or make it easier on yourself and the critters and put the fish in the bigger tank.
Also, i hate to say it, but neither ignorance nor love, neither crossed fingers nor sheer force of WILL are capable of making a dirty, neglected tank clean; of keeping your clown knife, common pleco, or cute baby pacu at a more acceptable size; or making your evil mean fishies stop bullying your scared wussy fishies.
It is up to YOU to do the research, do the work, and make the effort.
To everyone who has been here, you know what I'm saying - you've seen it. To all newbies - good, you're here. Ask your questions, we want to help you. Keep it up, be prepared to listen and learn a lot, because almost all of us have something to say, and if you can help you, we will. But you guys have to do your part too, or at least, i think most of us here would like it if you did.
When we say something is going to get big for your tank, it will. There might be a difference of opinion over exactly how big, but when ten people are saying 18-22 inches, please don't listen to the lone ranger who claims no more than a 5 inch adult growth, even though that is what you desperately want to hear.
We like to ask a lot of questions. WE ARE NOT TRYING TO TRICK YOU! Fish die, it happens. To be able to tell you why, there are a good amount of things we need to know first. Maybe your tank is too cold, or too old, or too small, or maybe your betta has lived a record 10 years and it was just his time to go. It's not always your fault, but we have to ask the questions to get to the answer.
Sometimes there is no answer. Don't blame yourself.
If you don't like the answer you get, sorry. Our goal is to find the best way to care for fish, keeping them healthy and thriving, not just living in a tank. Most of us want what is best for the fish, not necessarily what is best for you, and our responses will reflect that.
If it is recommended that you return a fish because of tank size or compatibilty, it not a reflection of you as a person. So you made a mistake, or succumbed to the temptation that ALL of us face, the "I want that fish!" temptation. It happens. This is your chance to make the right choice, and next time you can think twice, come here and ask questions, THEN go get that fish and know that you can take good care of it because this time you're prepared.
Okay, I'm done. Maybe i should have put this in the Blog section.
