In your experience, how fast do Amazon Swords grow? Also, what kind of substrates and fert additions do you use?

If they are happy they can grow quite quickly.

I once had a Ozelot sword that I got when it was about 2" tall. A year later I had to remove it from my 55 gallon tank as it was taking up about 1/4 of the tank.

That was in a high light CO2 injected tank.

Substrate is really not important as long as you dose the water column. And for water column dosing they want the same nutrients as every other plant.

I put a small one in my 46g in January. I had to remove it in late July as it was shading everything else on at least half the tank. They start slow, but once they have good roots going... look out.

As long as they get an occasional root tab or shot of liquid ferts into the substrate (what I did), they can be grown in anything.

How long does it take to get good roots going?

Mine started to take off somewhere around the 2 month mark, slower growth until then - in a mostly sand bed w/ a little gravel in it. When I pulled it, there were roots all the way across the aquarium.

I've had one in my tank for about 2 months now. I didn't have any ferts, C02, or lighting for the first month though. It has grown a little in that time, but not much. It's only been about a month since I've been adding C02, ferts, and have better lighting. So we'll see if it starts to take off.
