i just bought some zucchini from the local food mart, i blanched it so it would sink, i have 1 slice in my 10g with ottos and amanos and i put 1 slice in my 20g with guppies, kuhlies, and corys, so i was wondering how long should i leave the slices in the tank for? are there any risk in leaving them in the tanks for to long?

In smaller tanks like yours, I wouldn't go much loner than 12 - 18 hours. I've gone as long as a couple days ('cause I got busy and forgot) but that was in a larger tank.

Pretty much anytime I've left it in the tank longer than overnight (roughly 12-16 hours), it usually starts to become a problem. As in, the water starts to smell a bit and become a little cloudy. Upon removing veggies that have been in the water for that long, they also smell disgusting.

So, the lesson I've taken away from this is to be vigilant, and remove veggies within 12 hours.

Honestly, though, I think the stinkier and more rotten the veggies are, the more the plecos like it. Where as most of the other fish and shrimp seem to ignore the food after a period of time, the longer it's in the tank, the more my clown and rubberlip seem to feed on it.

I use to drop in at night, remove in morning.

ohh alright thanks for the replys, im going to start giving it to them here and there, but now i can just drop it in at night and remove it before i go to school in the morning :)

Wellllllllll .....

I drop or spear them in and leave it. It's usually gone in about a day. I have babies so it needs to get a little on the mushy side for them to be able to hit it. If there is any left and it floats to the top, that's when I pull it out.

Oh...and the BNPs...good luck with that. In at night, gone in the morning. :)

I keep mine in for a good 24 hours before I have any kind of problem. It is usually all gone by then because my oto catfish and trumpet snails clean it up pretty quickly. Once you see peices coming off, thats when you need to take it out.
