I want to set up a Rubber Maid trash can (50 gal.) to put water in so that it can dechlorinate on it's own. How long do I have to wait until the chlorine is gone? Thanks.

Exactly how long will vary depending on the volume of water and surface area among other things. Letting it sit overnight would probably be long enough, but letting it sit a few days might be a good idea to err on the side of caution. Make sure it's chlorine in the water though; chloramine is much more stable than chlorine and won't go away quite so easily.

I let my water sit for about 24 hours. Chloramine is designed to prevent chlorine from disloving, so if there is chlroamine in your water, you have to use chemicals. Call up your water company, and try to get somebody who knows the difference between Chloramine and chlorine.

I run an airstone in my 30 gallon trash cans, chlorine is gone in about 12-14 hours. I have a chlorine test kit that was part of a package deal. so I use it since I have it. I haven't tried it without the airstones but imagine 24 hours would be plenty.
BTW, I prep the water 1 week in advance so It's always ready. This way there is 30-60 gallon s that can go into my tanks anytime I need it, don't have to wait.
