I took the otos out of my 5.5 gal betta tank and put them in a larger tank I'm bringing along.

I thought I'd go with amano shrimp in the tank for some algae control. There are already 2 zebra nerites. And the otos have left the tank so clean it literally sparkles, lol. I had been supplementary feeding them.

What are peoples' opinions on amano shrimp for controlling some types of algae? I've always had them in conjuntion with other algae eaters so dont really know.

It's a moderately planted tank, still growing out. Has a betta in it that is pretty peaceful...doesnt bother the small rasboras.

How many shrimp should I get to help keep algae down? Since it is small, shallow tank, the crypts directly under the light do tend do develop a little.

And do people think the betta will go after the shrimp? I'm hoping they're large enough but not sure.

Thanks!

You can buy Amano from msjinkzd, via her classified or PM. I received a packaged from her today with Amano shrimp, see the most recent posts in my tank journal below for pictures. I got 20 in a 75G, but she said I could do 40. They are regarded as excellent algae eaters, and immediately upon releasing them to the tank, all 20 started eating algae. No hiding, no looking around their new home, straight to eating algae.

why are you adding amanos if you don't have algae? They are easy to supplement, but they are competition for your otos and your zebra nerites which can be more complicated to supplement.

My otos did take care of the algae....but I moved them to my 10 g. So now there are just 2 zebra nerites and they are doing a good job, but the crypt leaves directly under the lights are already starting to show a teeny bit of algae.

It's a small shallow tank with a 15 watt bulb. I do have some fast-growing water sprite, but I still expect some algae.

And I'd be happy to wait until there is some algae build up before adding the amanos...that's what I usually do to settle in new otos.

I heard that you have horned nerites? They are smaller...do they eat algae off plant leaves?
