How many Harlequin Rasboras can fit in a 29 gallon?

I like these little guys because they're hardy and I think they look cool as a species only tank.

I have a 29 gallon planted with an HOB filter, (whatever is recommended for that size tank).

Nitrates are at 5, (all that's in there are 5 rasboras and 1 betta).

No ammonia

I'd dump a dozen at least, even up to 20.....

What would your watyer change routine be?

I've been doing 20% once/week. Could I do a 20% twice a week?

Would a 40% once a week stress them out, is that too much water? Or would that be great for them?

If you don't have a lot of bottom feeders, you can easily do as Bob said. IMO 30% WCs are pretty much a minimum, 20%/week isn't enough, unless you're quite understocked &/or have a ton of plants.

I routinely do 50+% water changes on my tanks. The fish's appetite is always better right after a big change like that, so no issues here. Now if you have been doing small enough changes that some portion of the total dissolved solids have crept up(nitrates may not let you know in a planted tank), you don't want to jump to doing big changes like I'm doing because a big tds change can be too stressful on your fish. What you'd do is increase the size of your water changes by a small increment doubled each round. That eases the transition from "heavier" water slowly enough that the fish can adjust.

That would be nice. One large weekly WC is better then 2 smaller WC per week.

Ok cool, thanks. I'll up my changes to 33% this week, and 40% next week.

Thanks!

Like Bob suggested. You could easily have 12-20 rasboras if you want.

In my 29g, I've got 6 celestial pearl danios, 6 silver hatchets, 6 julii corys and an angel fish. A weekly 50% WC keeps my nitrate creep below 20ppm.

That sounds like a lot!

Do you think a water change that large could stress them out?

I'm pretty sure the harlequin rasboras are hardy, one of the reasons I got them. They came today in the mail and they are juveniles. All survived the shipping process and don't seem too stressed.

Are the danios and hatchets hardy?

Will the angelfish outgrow the tank?

And that sounds like a cool tank by the way.

I've never had a water change negatively effect a fish and I don't do less than 50% weekly water changes to any of the tanks in my sig. In fact, on the oscar and severum tank, I do more like an 80-90% WC.

Hardy as in easy to keep? I've never had a fish that I'd call difficult to keep. Any fish will be sensitive to poor water conditions. The danios are very tiny, as are the julii corys. The hatchets are about US quarter sized. Hatchets are a little tough to keep in that you have to have a full or hood or a glass top on your tank because they are jumpers.

A single angel is fine in a 29g. I wouldn't put one in a tank any smaller.
