I went to the fish store today and saw they had a silver dollar fish so i decided to get it.. So now in my 40 gallon i have 2 neon tetras and a silver dollar... On the species profile page it says they should be kept in schools... would 2 or 3 be enough?? My wife wants to get a rainbow parrot fish as well and i don't want to overstock the tank... what do you guys think?

Hi :)

Wish I could help out with the silvers but I am still somewhat of a n00b.
If you dont mind me asking whats a rainbow parrot fish? Have you got a picture? I have a red parrot at the mo and wanted another as they are so interesting to watch.

Sorry to go a little off topic

Thats just what they were called at the LFS.. they had a few orange ones but the lady there said they usually get them in all kinds of colors..

Silver Dollars can get to about 8 inches in size full grown, so you can't put too many in a 40 gallon tank. I'd say three. Also I'd be taking those neon tetras out of there! they are food for your silver dollar, and if they aren't now, they will be very soon. Your silver dollar should be done gorwing in about a year (if it is not stunted at all) These are large fish, so they are not great community fish.

Is it ok to just leave one in there or is it a must have to have more then one.

At least two

I had silver dollars years ago and remember them liking to be with their own. So we had a pair, Boney and Clyde. They are fun to watch. Seem to be peaceful and enthusiastic eaters.

I don't think it is completely nessesary for you to put more than one in the tank, but they will probably feel better if there is more than one. In the end it is really up to you. I would recommend that you have more, but you don't absolutely need to.
