how many tiger barbs will fit in a 55 gallon?

As the title states, looking to get a school of tiger barbs for my new 55g and need to know how many i can have considering I will be adding the following:

-5 giant danios
-6 black skirt tetras
-maybe a few corries for the bottom

I'd say at least a dozen. You might want to stop there, though, as if you can put in some fine-leaved plants, and good fry cover, you might soon have a few more than a dozen.

Yeah, 12 would be a good number. they aren't as aggressive towards other fish if theres 12+ too.

Include a few caves for the cories. They might not like all the hyperactive nippy fish racing around above their heads

Do they breed in captivity often?

I would like to get some in the near future but want to avoid the local pet store and possibly get them from a private hobbyist here.

Not all that often, at least as far as I've heard, but it can be done, even by accident, if your water is right. Check around with your local aquarium club--they should know if one of their members has done it.

Tiger barbs and cory cats would not be a good mix IMO.
