How much carbon do i need to put in my magnum 350 deluxe canister filter ? the instruction don't mention the amount of carbon needed, do i need to fill it completley ?

i'd go to petsmart or someplace and get ceramic hollow beads.. thats what i filled mine with. the beads provide a huge quantity of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow.
most on this board say that carbon is best used for when you want to take meds out of a tank after your fish has recovered from what ails it.

will the beads work even though they are submerged completly in water ? how do these magnums work anyway ? mine is a 100 gallon. the hose connectors are a real fun experiance, the coupler compression nuts threads broke trying to tighten them, so i resorted to using automotice hose clamps instead. does the carbon cannister need to be filled completely full , or only a small amount ?

far as i know, ceramic beads last indefinitely. they keep working unless the pores get completely clogged up with some sort of toxic slime. then you could just boil them and they would be good to go again.
how do i like the magnum? i wish i had planned the placement a little better. i plan on moving it to another tank, so i am putting up with the inconvenience because its temporary.
i end up taking it apart once every 10 days to 2 weeks or so.
the blue sleeve is pretty gunked up by then. its probably due to overfeeding. but the stuff on the sleeve looks like poop, not food. other people state they can go a month without servicing their eheim/ fluval cannister filters so the magnum appears to be more work.
i've had it running for 3 months maybe and the blue sleeve is starting to stretch out / wear out. i think i can make a sleeve from some cheap filter material i picked up at my lfs. that will save some money.

I had a heck of a time with the disconnect shut off valves, the compression nut[plastic] broke very easily and when i went back to the aquarium store to get another, the guy there broke the other one. i just got some small hose clamps at the auto parts store and used them, but the guy at the aquarium store gave me a pack of the rubber o rings that go around the top cover so i have 2 spares.
