How much flow should i be using in a 20 gallon reef tank? It will be primarily softies tank with maybe a few lps and 2 O. Clownfish. Also what brand should i use, should i even use a power head or use something different.

for something as small as a 20 gallon i would use 2 maxi-jet 1200's. place a powerhead on each side of the tank to create a crossing motion in the middle area of the tank. It will cut down on any dead spots and will also create somewhat of a realistic environment for the corals.

i heard of tunze stream powerheads that are meant to have even water flow rather than one jet of water shooting out, anyone got anything to say about this?

i agree
and sry not familiar with those powerheads.

I've got a tunze 6045. Works great, very small, low energy consumption and lots of dispersed flow. Over-priced though, I think the hydor koralia's are a better deal.

i have heard of the tunze powerheads and i have seen them in action and then i looked at the price of them. the one i saw was something like 165 bucks i believe. To me that is way over priced for what you get. IMHO i would stick with the maxi-jet 1200's, they are small and wont take up much space in your 20 gal and still pump out something like 295 GPH.

Uscalvary, you saw the tunze "stream" line of powerheads. They're gigantic, move as much water as a small outboard engine and are designed to bracket mount on the side of tanks larger than I will ever own. But tunze also makes a "nanostream" line of pumps that includes the 6025, 6045 and 6055 model. These are very different pumps, they are small (spherical in shape with a 2.7 inch diameter) and pump a disperse stream type displacement of water in volumes more suitable for the average reef system. The 6025 is $60 and 600gph, 6045 is $90 and 1150gph and I can't recall what the 6055 is.

Yeah drobes i have seen the Tunzes here in a local fish stores show tank. They are pretty big and he was selling them im pretty sure they were at 165 bucks or so. For what they do that is way over priced. Also overkill for a 20gal aquarium.

Wow, that's way over priced . My bad, I just assumed you were referring to the 6060 or 6080 model based on that price and comment about the size. The nano-stream models are some of the smallest pumps I've seen, smaller than the maxijet. In fact I think their small size is the only positive they have in comparison to the more reasonably priced and equally performing koralia's.

My 20g, soon to be reef, has two MJ900's on each side with crossing streams. I beleive they provide adequate flow for most softies. The reason I chose the 900's over the 1200's is because I have heard that they only drop about 50 gph but produce a lot less heat. Got that from nanoreefs.com. With my metal halide lighting, and living in Florida, I need all the help with heat reduction I can get.
