I have a new 55g that gets direct sunlight for about an hour and a half a day through a transom widow with an IR/UV film on it. The light only hits it during winter months. Is this tank going to have algae issues? Is there such thing as an OK amount of direct light?

I have a tank that gets full sunlight for about half the day. If you are ok with a bit of extra maintenance on algae and are diligent about watching the temp, I don't think it is a problem. In fact, my plants grow fabulously and the fishies like to swin where the sunlight streams through! Of course, this is just my opinion. Others will probably give you much more expert advice. With just an hour and a half of winter light per day I don't believe it will become too much of an issue. The water mass should be large enough to keep the temperature from swinging too far, but you should confirm this a few times to make certain. As far as algae issues it's kinda hard to say. I mean I have a 10g tank that has always had a bit of an algae issue, but 2 weeks ago the tank inhabitant died and in a week most of the algae died out on its own. I still have the lighting running for the plants so its kind of a weird situation.
