How often do antibiotics work for you?

This is a question i began thinking about as i now have a Gourami with a smll sore on its head. it could be due to bacterial infection or it could be due to fighting with the other males in my tank. He has plenty of places to go (3 males in a 120g), but he will try to be a trouble maker at times.

Anyway, I was reading and it seems everyone treats with antibiotics, but they very rarely work.

So, i was wondering, fr those of you who have been doing this a while, how often do antibiotic/fungal treatments work for you? And please separate Ick from the other diseaeses. ick seems easier to get rid of from what i have read.

I know I had a small cory cat with a bacterial/fungal infection. I had him in a Q tank and he made it through one course of treatment (4 days). He was looking better on the outside but was very lethargic. I started the next 4 day treatment and he died that first day.

So, anyone have an opinion here?
 
For a very small area of cottony fungus, I've used a little sea salt (no medication) and the problem was gone the next day.

For popeye problems, I had to use 2 consecutive treatments (2 weeks) of Maracyn 2 plus constant water changes to eliminate the problem, but it did eventually work well.

For finrot, I've had some success using Maracyn 2 medication. The problem lessened quite a bit, but never totally went away. I did not continue treating after the 2nd attempt (prolonged antibiotic use is not recommended, too stressful on immune system) and there are a few tiny holes in my betta's fins that recur from time to time, despite good water.

All in all, pretty good success with meds.
