If you haven't been doing large water changes for the past while then I caution you about starting with large ones now. It may end up throwing off the balance of the tank. I would suggest doing smaller 10-20% changes every other day for the next week. Then stick to a resonable schedual from that point on.
The good thing about doing larger water changes is that if there is an emergency and you need to get toxins out of a tank fast (say a small child dumps a whole bottle of food into the tank) then you won't risk the tank water being much different fromt he tapwater you use to do the water change.
