I'm being forced to take down my palu, and I'm looking for a new different kind of animal to keep. I saw these guys, and they look awesome! (My mom agreed to letting these guys stay, as they don't creep her out or annoy her like the frogs do)

What should I do for bedding, feeding, how many can I keep in a 10 , ect.

Thanks,
Cam

Ahhh....rodents. The one thing my parents wouldn't let me keep as a pet.

As of right now their encouraging it, I think it's cause their sick of the meal worms and bloodworms taking up all the space in the fridge....

from the brief reading that I've done aquariums aren't the ideal place for hamsters, as they don't provide adequate ventilation.

Yes even with a screen top. Their urine is slightly acidic and the vapors from it don't circulate out from the bottom of the tank. Not enough air flow basically.

I keep my breeding rats in tanks and have had no issues. I would think they would be about the same as many other rodents. A high quality pellet as a staple supplemented by fresh fruits and veggies as well as some whole grains and their diet will be complete. The thing about bedding is you get what you pay for, if you go with cheap bedding it's gonna smell. I am not for sure of the name of what I use but I buy it at my LFS it's recycled newspaper or something like that, I will have to dig it out and get the name for you.

I used the recycled newspaper bedding when I had them and liked it much better than other types. Petluvr also has the right idea about their diet. I didn't find my dwarf hamsters to be very friendly though. I much preferred the mice that I had.

I've had a regular hamster and a dwarf hamster. Regular guy was pretty hand-friendly, even though I didn't handle him too too often; The dwarf bit me so much in the first week, I decided to take it back. Was about to put it back in it's box to return it, which was in the garage, and I dropped it. With five cats, I don't think it did too well.

Don't bother with a dwarf, go for one of the friendlier ones. They're small enough as it is ;)

They have teeth like chisels and if they clamp down on a finger, you're going to a doctor. The more hamsters you have, the more often you MUST change the bedding. Rodents do have the tendency to smell, if you are tardy changing the bedding. Don't have babies, unless you already have a place to give them away... They aren't bashful about breeding and they breed like typical rodents.
