I have seen some pictures of aquariums covered in flame moss and was wondering how do you clean a tank that has the substrate fully covered in flame moss, or any other moss for that matter. Can you just lightly "gravel" vacuum on top of the moss? I really like the look of tanks that have the whole bottom covered in moss but I want to know how I would have to clean it before I try it.

same as any other tank covered in a carpet. don't gravel vac it, you shouldn't be gravel vacumming a planted tank anyway. The gunk in the gravel keeps the plants nourished. If you want to get the stuff floating around just fan the moss with the gravel vac and suck up stuff that stirs up. But don't jam it in the gravel or you are going to suck up a lot of moss with it.

blow it out with a turkey baster or powerhead.

yank the moss out... shake it out in a bucket of old tank water... place it back where you want it.

keep the moss attached to rocks or decorations that can be removed for a quick cleaning.

i just move the gravel vac around in circles kicking up the extra waste.

When I do my water changes I just hover the hose near my mosses try to suck up what I can, that along with trying to keep inverts that might go in the moss to clean it up a bit. Taking it out to rinse never works for me since most of the debris comes off before I break the waters surface with it. :swear:

yeah, just swirl the vac around near the moss, but don't touch it, or if you don't want to use a vac near any of your plants, just get a few inverts.........rcs colony.
