How to Control Platy Breeding?

Hello,

Someone mentioned that I should consider platies for my tank. I have always liked them but I have strayed away because I do not want to deal with an overabundance of fry.

So is it okay to keep just females or do they also fight like the males?

Thanks

well just let nature take it's course. If they survive try to sell them and some lfs will take them, or the parents might eat them and then no worries.

Back when I had mollies I had a similar problem. Grumbled about it at the lfs one day and somebody there recommended getting a female betta. They can breed all they want and Madame Vacuum will take care to prevent the population from getting out of hand. Any who survive will be truly superior specimens and there is usually never any problem selling platys in the AC Marketplace.

An unfortunate experiment with endler fry and some remarkably small angelfish produced similar results. I can't vouch for the female betta solution as I never tried it, but it might be worth a shot.

With all females you should be fine with no worries at all
like ballyhoo said you've got options incase nature wants to to choose its own course lol

Pappy is right. Buying all females is no guarantee you won't end up with fry in your tank. Given their ability to store sperm, it may not even be limited to one batch from each female. Stocking them with micropredators like xan suggested is a good idea, as is abstinence only education. If you're really worried about overpopulation, you might want to consider some fish that won't breed as easily, such as some of the many easier egglayers like tetras and danios.

Honesttly, the fry will be eaten so quickly that you won't even notice. However, you just need to go buy some guppy grass or a HOB breeding trap if you want some to live.
