I purchased a baby rubber mouth pleco yesterday and some algae thins. The problem is that I also have 4 juvenile silver dollars who love the algae thins. How can i make sure that the pleco gets enough to eat? The tank has been set up for about nine weeks and doesn't appear to have much algae.

I suggest you get him/her a cave and stick some of the algae wafer in it for him/her, the silver dollars can't get to it if the cave has a low, smallish opening.

I'll have to construct something really small and hope the pleco can find it in my 55g tank. The pleco is tiny (about an inch) and the silver dollars are only a couple inches long.

Also try feedin after lights out. A lot of plecs are night feeders. I had the same trouble with a golden nugget. Maybe try sweet potato or courgette rubbed with garlic after lights out. Works wonders!!! Good luck

yup feed it at night.. most plec's are nocturnal.

translation for yanks...
courgette = cucumber :)

Mine loves cukes/zukes/yellow squash. I clip them on the side of the tank.

I have the same problem with a 7" common plec in a tank with big goldfish...they attack his food even if I just fed 'em. My plec has his own house (see avatar); I have started placing 2-3 pleco discs just at the edge of his "doorway" so he can grab at least one before the GF get it.

Since putting it in the tank, the pleco either hides or is scurrying all over the tank mainly stuck to the glass. The problem is that the silver dollars are omnivores and love algae wafers. As soon as they see the wafers they pounce on them. But, I've built two little rock caves and put algae flakes in them. The silver dollars know they are there, but , so far, they haven't been able to get to them. Hopefully the pleco will find them.
