How To Remove Scale From Glass Tank?

Greetings everyone.

Just wondering if there is a good / easier way to remove that hard scaly build up that forms a line along the glass when water starts to evaporate from the tank. I also have a lot of it on my glass lids as well.

I generally scrape it as much as I can with an old plastic credit card. However, after moving house recently, two of my 4x2x2 tanks are empty and I want to take the time to give them a really good clean up and makeover before setting up again.

I'm hoping there may be a safe solvent or something that others have used successfully?

Many, many, thanks

on the glass you can use a razor blade and/or vinegar, I believe they may work....just rinse really well after using the vinegar. I wouldn't use the razor on the plastic though, might turn out to be a nightmare....Good luck and HTH ;)

(edit: additional text....... Welcome to the boards ;) )

Oxyclean will remove most of the haze, is completely safe and rinses away easily. Relieves you of scrubbing--I clean my tanks with oxyclean and a nylon scrubber, no problems.

i got the same problem but worse, i tryed the vinager but it didn't work, i'm going to try oxyclean.

Thanks so much for your responses everyone! Ahhhh - how did anyone pursue a hobby before the days of the internet! :)

Just one more question if anyone is still reading this thread.......
Oxyclean has come up a few times - does anyone know if this is available in Australia - I haven't looked yet, though the name sounds a little familiar.......

Once again - thankyou to everyone who responded so quickly. I'm going to try the vinegar option in the next few days and if that isn't successful I'll try to hunt down some 'Oxy-Clean' or 'Safe and Easy Aquarium Cleaner'.

Thanks,
Cich-Chick

PS I've always been told by other experienced fish keeping friends that you should never take to a tank with a razor blade as it only scratches the glass...... any truth to that one?
